How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

During a seminar I attended yesterday, the speaker threw out some statistics about how often companies were updating their websites.  Based on a survey of 300 companies, 1/3 of which were marketing agencies, most companies are updating every 2-3 years.   However, over 60% of marketing companies had updated their website in the last 4-12 months.   Why the difference?

One can only guess!   The bigger question is why should you care what other companies are doing with their website?  If your website is delivering results, then you don’t need to redesign.  However, if your website is not delivering results, then it’s time to take a look.  Maybe just small, constant improvements would work.  Add testimonials.  Or a video that explains how you can add value.

The bottom line “when” should you redesign – is based on the success of the website.   You have to have measurements in place to do that.   I have done website measurements for 15 years.  If you need some tips (for example Google Analytics is free), just let me know.

Social Media for Small Businesses

Credit: Hanspoldoja, Flickr user

Did you know that last year 40% of companies with social media profiles gained new customers? (Source) It’s true, and you can join them by creating profiles for your business on social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

There’s nothing more satisfying to a small business owner than getting to know tons of new customers, and the best way to get those customers and build on the relationships is through social media. Building relationships and gaining additional customers aren’t the only benefits of joining social networks, though. There are other benefits, which I’m going to reveal today. Then, in the following weeks, you’ll also learn how to use social media successfully.

Why Social Media for Small Businesses is Worth It

It gives you the opportunity to build your brand. Social media is a great way for new businesses to get recognition, and for those of you who have been in business a while, you can continue to grow your brand’s reputation.

You’ll learn from and help other small business owners. Once you start befriending other small business owners, you can learn from the advice they share on their newsfeeds. Furthermore, you can share business tips of your own to help them.

A customer’s feedback could help you improve things you didn’t know about. As soon as your customers start commenting on your social media profiles, you’ll discover their likes, dislikes and suggestions. Moreover, you’ll be able to respond to the feedback they leave as well as use it to improve your business.

Lets you study your competition. When you view your competitors’ profiles, you’ll be able to see what they’re customers are saying about them. You can also keep up with your competition’s activities, and you can use all the information you gather to strengthen your own small business.

Now that I’ve told you the benefits of social media for small businesses, I’m sure you’d like to know how to start networking without breaking any of the etiquette rules, right? Creating an Effective Advertising Page

Selling advertising space is one of the best ways to earn an additional income with your small business blog; however, if your advertising page lacks some of the most important information, you won’t be successful in your attempt to sell advertising. That being said, the following information will help you create an effective advertising page.

What Potential Advertisers Want to See on an Advertising Page

  • Demographics and statistics.
  • What you charge for advertising space.
  • The size of ads you sell and where you’ll place them on your blog.
  • Information on how they can purchase advertising space from you.
  • Success stories from others who’ve bought advertising space on your blog or website.

Gathering Visitor Information

When someone invests in advertising space on your small business blog, they want to know who will see their ad and if those people would have an interest in what they’re selling. This information helps them decide if advertising on your site could possibly earn them a return on investment (ROI). Furthermore, they may use the information to create an ad that fits what your visitors want, which increases their chances of earning a ROI. Odds are if you don’t reveal your blog’s demographics, potential advertisers will leave without purchasing advertising space from you.

Since you don’t know what those who visit your blog like to buy, what ads interest them, their gender and etc., you have to ask, and the best way to gather this information is via a survey. Your survey can include questions such as what products and services they buy most when shopping online, and what ads get their attention. Other information you should collect from your blog’s visitors via the survey is their gender, age, country, occupation, job title and any other information you feel is relevant.

As the survey results start to come in, post them on your advertising page. Only post percentages or numbers; don’t reveal your visitors’ names, e-mail addresses or other personal information you may have asked for.

So, what do you do when your Survey doesn’t get the desired responses? Simple, offer an incentive such as a freebie or discount — freebies work better. Some freebies you could offer include eBooks, gift certificates and white papers. Make sure the freebie is relevant to your small business blog.

Revealing Your Blog’s Popularity

In addition to disclosing your demographics, you should divulge your blog’s statistics. The most important statistics to publish on your advertising page are your monthly page views and unique visitors. The numbers, of course, would be on average rather than exact. This information gives potential advertisers an idea of just how popular your blog is. If these numbers are too low, you may want to consider putting off selling advertising space until after your blog’s traffic has grown.

The Key to Getting as Many Advertisers as You Can: Give ‘Em What They Want

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve left an advertising information page because they didn’t list their prices. In order to find out how much I’d have to pay to advertise on their blog, they instructed me to contact them via e-mail or phone. With that said, DON’T hide your prices! If you reveal your advertising rates, you’ll probably gain more advertisers. And since I’m on the subject of gaining advertisers, another way to get them instantly is by placing a call to action on your advertising information page. Your call to action should be an add to cart button, so they can purchase the advertising directly from your blog.

Let Your Current and Past Advertisers Bring in the Sales for You

Ask for testimonials from past and current advertisers. Once you get those testimonials, publish them on your advertising page. When you publish the testimonial, also list the advertiser’s name, and link to their blog/website, so potential advertisers can verify that the testimonials are real and not made up.

Something that will benefit you more is case studies. After someone has been advertising on your site for over a month, or anytime they e-mail you raving about the positive results they’ve received by buying advertising on your site, survey them to see how much you helped increase their traffic and etc. Next, use their answers to write a case study, and post a link to each case study on your advertising information page.

I realize this may seem like a lot of information to absorb at once, but in my opinion, it is the best way to create an effective advertising page.

Do you already sell advertising space on your blog, and does your current advertising page seem to be working well for you? If so, leave a comment with some advice of your own.

Logo Love

I really do love logos, as corny as the logo is to the right. I have loved logos since long before I ever became a designer. Do you remember shopping with Mom as a kid and seeing the logo of your favorite candy bar or cereal? It could conjure up all kinds of emotions… now that is power.

I believe that is what a logo is supposed to do – evoke an instant image in your mind about the company it represents.

Prior to starting a logo project, we ask our clients to brainstorm on a “word-association” list. For example, if you want to be known as the most cost effective bargain brand out there, we will not create a high end, sophisticated logo. Target should not be confused with Tiffanys!

Follow this link to an article that talks about different trends in logos. It is lengthy, but it groups logos into various clever visual themes such as, Cubist, Spores, Ghosts, Tendrils, etc. While we don’t have our logos broken down into clever themes such as these, we tend to try out various shapes, sizes, and appearances.

We recently designed a series of logos for a client, Griff Paper & Film. The client, like many others, maintains separate corporate divisions, yet we wanted a consistent visual identity throughout.

If we can help you narrow down a logo for your company, or if you want a new look, we can help. Give us a call at 215-491-3448.

The Best Ways to Earn an Additional Income With Your Small Business Blog

In my first blog post, I told you that a small business blog helps you build creditability and shows consumers you’re knowledgeable about the products/services you’re selling. Well, in addition to that, did you know there are other ways to earn money with your blog? It’s true, and today I’m going to reveal four of what I believe is the best ways to earn an additional income with your small business blog.

Sell Advertising

Some small business blog owners sell advertising space to other bloggers as well as website owners. Most small business bloggers who sell advertising place banner ads in the sidebar on the right side of their blogs, and they usually position those ads near the top. You decide which size banner ads you want to place on your blog, and then you set the price that you want to charge others to advertise on your blog. If your blog gets lots of traffic, you can charge $20.00 or more per month, and if your blog’s still new or doesn’t get a whole lot of traffic, $5.00 a month seems to be a fair rate; you can increase that rate as your blog continues to grow.

Before you decide whether or not you want to sell advertising space on your small business blog, here are three things you should consider: The ad, of course, should be relevant to your blog, some who want to purchase advertising space on your blog could be your competition, and finally, even though this method of earning an additional income with your blog can bring in a decent amount of income, you don’t want to fill your blog with too many ads. If a blogger places too many ads on their blog, those ads can be distracting to your readers and actually cause you to lose traffic.

Offer a Paid Membership Section

Once your blog begins to get a substantial amount of traffic and you know your readers are enjoying the advice you’re sharing, consider launching a paid membership section. This section should include premium content that is ONLY available to members who will pay you a small monthly fee.

The articles in your paid membership section needs to be better than the free advice you usually share on your small business blog. Believe it or not, some readers are willing to pay a small fee every month to gain access to better articles that reveal more secrets.

Write and Sell Webinars and eBooks

Webinars and eBooks not only help you earn additional income with your small business blog, but they’re a great way to continue to share your expertise.

After you’ve written a webinar and/or eBook, price it reasonably. Both sell better when they’re not overpriced.

Market Merchandise That Displays Your Logo

As you probably know by now, a small business blog helps you build your brand and shows consumers you’re experienced, which helps increase sales. Well, did you know t-shirts, hats, mousepads and other merchandise with your logo and tagline on them helps your brand as well? It does, and selling these products via a link from your blog is another way to earn money.

There are countless ways to earn an additional income with your small business blog, but rather than write a lengthy post that you’d probably not read in its entirety, I decided to share four of the best ways I know to earn more money with your small business blog.

Personally, I currently enjoy just sharing information that I know will help you succeed in business, and that’s why you won’t see the aforementioned methods applied on this blog. Later, I may decide I want to earn more money with my blog and execute some or all of these ways to do just that, but for now, I prefer to concentrate on giving you advice that I hope and pray brings you success.

What is Viral Marketing?

You have probably heard the term…”Going Viral.” It sounds nasty doesn’t it? It has its roots in “a contagious disease being communicated.” However when that disease is a marketing message, your marketing message and it is spread to a larger and larger audience. It is a good thing.

So what are the ways to get your message to “go viral?” First off it needs to be original, not salesy. Think about the viral messages you have received, it was probably a joke, right? So another good ingredient for viral marketing is humor. Did you pass that joke on to your friends? It was pretty easy wasn’t it…another key ingredient… make it easy to share or view.

A good example, most marketers will cite the Old Spice commercials.  Yes they are selling a product yet they will have the attributes of a successful viral campaign. Like I said, originality, humor, easily shared, oh and the best… interesting visuals.

Other effective viral campaigns include quizzes (check out this one if you think you know geography: http://www.rethinkingschools.org/just_fun/games/mapgame.html) for freebies, giveaways, and lists. Think about Letterman’s Top Ten List and how many imitators have come along. Why? Because it works.

Color Trends for through the Years

Do you remember Day-Glo colors? Very reminiscent of the 60’s.  What about avocado appliances…they will date your kitchen back to the 70’s. And then comes the 1980’s with the subtle gray and burgundy, the colors of our first corporate branding. However back then it was just called letterhead and business card.  Teal was in vogue in the 90’s, along with a color called celery.

With the 21st century no real color trends come to mind. I actually did some research, in an article written October 2000 “ColorMatters©” they seemed to agree: “The turn of the millennium has intensified the quest for a color or colors to mark this momentous point in time. In the meantime, everyone is already trying to pinpoint the next hot new color. . . All things considered, color trends are a complex issue, one which is not easily defined by simple color predictions.”

Now, at the end of the decade, no color trend or combination of colors have really defined the aught years of 2000.
So now they start again, trying to predict what will be the trendy colors for the fall of 2011 The fashion industry takes it season by season, I guess if they really bomb, they can launch new spring colors without care. If they are right, they will take what sticks, add to it and create a new revised palette. The colors that are popular, the ones that do stick, tend to become the trends…in everything. You’ll see everything from tee shirts to towels, coats to cars, and even wash cloths to washers.  Why don’t you vote for your favorite color? Also you’ll see the results of what others selected. And then wait and watch for these colors to show up in the local stores!

Must Have WordPress Plugins for Small Business Blogs

WordPress has many great features, but one of the best that is a favorite among WordPress users is the plugins. WordPress plugins are great for SEO marketing, usability and communicating with your customers.

The official WordPress plugin directory contains more than 10,000 plugins, but you don’t want to overboard. If you try to run too many plugins at a time, you may encounter problems with your small business blog. I’ve heard of some bloggers using as many as 20 plugins without issues, but again, you should try to keep them to a minimum.

With that in mind, here are some plugins that I believe are essential for any small business blog:

All in One SEO Pack

This is a popular WordPress plugin that will help your blog rank higher in the search engines. It generates META tags, optimizes your titles for search engines, automatically generates canonical URLs to prevent content, and much more.

Wordpress plugin - All in One SEO Pack

Redirection WordPress Plugin

This is a great plugin for managing your 301 redirections and keeping track of 404 errors. For instance, if you change the URL of a page on your small business blog, you can add a 301 redirect to ensure users are sent to the correct page. The 301 redirect also lets search engines know you have permanently moved that page to a new location. Furthermore, this plugin automatically adds a 301 redirection when you change a post’s URL.

Subscribe to Comments

After you install this plugin on your small business blog, a check box will appear near the comments box. If your readers click to place a check in that box, they’ll receive a notification via email when you or one of your other readers reply to the post they commented on and subscribed to. See the screenshot below for an example of what will appear in the comments section of your posts.

WordPress Mobile Edition

More and more folks are reading blogs and websites from mobile devices such as iPods, iPads and smart phones, and if your blog isn’t mobile friendly, you could lose traffic, which, of course, could cost you sales. However, if you install this plugin, then your small business blog will detect the mobile device and display the mobile-friendly version of your website.

A Social Plugin of Your Choice

A social plugin allows your readers to recommend your posts to their social networking friends and followers. Not only does this help increase traffic to your small business blog, but it could also help boost your rankings in the search engines.

I use the 1-click Retweet/Share/Like social WordPress plugin for this blog. This plugin gives my readers the option to share my posts with their Twitter followers, LinkedIn Connections and/or Facebook friends; however, if you’d like your blog’s readers to share your posts through several other social networks, you can choose a social plugin of your liking. For instance, many other bloggers use the SexyBookmarks plugin, which offers more sharing options (e.g. Yahoo! Mail, Google Gmail, Hotmail, Buzzster, Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon, Google Buzz and other networks).

WP-DB Backup

Hopefully, for your sake, it never happens, but if your small business blog is ever hacked or crashes, you would lose everything and may have to start over from scratch. Well, that is if you don’t have this plugin. Once you install the WP-DB-Backup plugin, you’ll be able to configure it to automatically backup your small business blog. In addition, you can download the backup file to your server or request that it be emailed to you.

Installing WordPress Plugins on Your Small Business Blog

First, to ensure that you don’t get a virus or risk having your blog hacked, the best place to obtain plugins is through the official WordPress directory. Now, on to installing the WordPress plugins…

The best way to install the plugins you want is by logging into your WordPress dashboard. Once you’ve logged in, click the “Plugins” tab that will be located on the left.

Installing WordPress Plugins Step 1

Under the “Plugins” tab, click “Add New.” From there you can search for the plugins. To find all of the WordPress plugins I recommended, select “Term,” and then enter the plugin name in the search field (places quotation marks around the plugin name).

Installing WordPress Plugins Step 2

Finally, click “Details” underneath the name of the WordPress plugin to learn more about it. Then when you’re ready to install that plugin, click “Install Now.”

Installing WordPress Plugins Step 3

What WordPress plugins do you use for your small business blog? Share your recommendations by leaving a comment.

Why do you have a website?

Believe it or not, even today some companies do NOT have a web site. Really. And, if they do, some companies have web site dating back to the last century. (I always wanted to say that.) So if you do have a web site, ask yourself why?
If you answered:

  1. Because the boss’ son built it in college
  2. Our Ad agency told us we needed to have one
  3. Our competition has one
  4. IT department said was necessary to get a cool email address
  5. I don’t know, I don’t care, and I never look at it…

Then you don’t know what you’re missing.

The obvious reasons to have a web site are to:

  1. Have your clients and prospects FIND you
  2. Create an image that you are on “top of your game”
  3. Provide information to turn prospects into sales- now there’s a concept!

Also, take a look at the way your web site is analyzed. Do you know how your customers and prospects are finding you? AND what they are viewing once they get there? Even how long they stay? You should. This information is priceless when it comes to updating your web content or your entire site.

Remember, unlike a printed brochure. Once it’s done, it’s NEVER done. That is the beauty of the web. Everyday, week, or month you can keep your customers and prospects alerted to what is going on in your company. Statistics show that a site with updated CONTENT will attract activity.

I know most of our tech savvy clients know this. I am surprised how many new people I am running into that have not touched their site in years. Is it time for you think about a “Web site Tune-up?”

Prevent Font Abuse

Everyone has an opinion…there is a saying about that isn’t there? Well regardless, I am going to express mine. This one involves the use of type. There are certain style manuals that give you punctuation rules.  We’ve become use to spell checkers and even a grammar checkers. But no one has created a “that font can’t be read” checker! So I am going to give you a few pointers on what not to do when it comes to type, whether in print or on the web.

I will need to illustrate some of these because the web is not compatible with all fonts. If you choose a special or unique font specific to your system, do not assume it will translate across all platforms. I guess that can be rule the first rule

#1. Stick with the standard fonts when publishing any communication on-line. (i.e. Blogs, Web sites, ENewletters). What are the standards? You can’t go wrong with Helvetica, Verdana, Arial for san serif fonts and Times, Times New Roman or Georgia for your serif fonts.

#2. DO NOT SET TYPE IN ALL CAPS, ESPECIALLY LONG SENTENCES. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING DOESN’T IT. ALSO IT IS HARD TO READ. Stop it now!

#3. Keep these script fonts for wedding invitations, and don’t use all caps.

#4. Color text on color background- can be dangerous. Readability is an issue. Rule of thumb, black will read over most tints, even gray up to around 60%. Also watch reversing type out of a light color. If in doubt go lighter or darker.

#5. Light text on white – make sure it can be read. This is especially prevalent on the web. Every monitor is different. A nice rich gold on your system may look like beige on mine, and unreadable.

#6. Reversing small italic text – sure as long as you don’t want it to be read.

#7. Mixing too many fonts in too many styles. Where should I look???

This is just a start of my pet peeves when it comes to type setting. As I come across examples, good and bad, I will post them. See if you don’t agree.

Oh, one more thing, I received an email offer last week for “FREE fonts.”  I love fonts and I love FREE.  When I linked over, yep they were FREE but they were UNREADABLE fonts. Really. And I can assure you that someone, somewhere will try to use them.
